Aer Lingus travel disruption
Cancelled or delayed flights
For policies in force prior to 19th June 2024, the below information is applicable.
We have been monitoring the industrial action (work to rule) from Aer Lingus pilots which commenced on 26th June 2024 with no reported end date.
Work to rule action means pilots will not work overtime, accept amendments to rosters or can be contacted outside of working hours. This will likely cause disruptions to our members travel plans.
EU Regulation 261 aims to ensure the right to assistance or compensation for passengers of European based airlines, in the event of flight cancellation, delay or denied boarding. If your flight is affected by the industrial action, please contact the airline as soon as you are aware. The airline is obliged to provide you with written confirmation of any entitlement under EU261.
For any cancelled flights where the airline has not offered reimbursement, re-routing or rebooking, this needs to be confirmed by the airline in writing and submitted to us with any claims.
· If your flight has not been cancelled and is only delayed due to the industrial action, your Vhi MultiTrip policy can consider claims for delays in excess of 12 hours only, provided you have checked in for your flight. Please refer to your Terms and Conditions for benefit details.
· If you are delayed on the outward leg of your trip from Ireland, and delayed by 12 hours or more, your Vhi MultiTrip policy can consider an abandonment claim for unused travel and accommodation costs.
· If you are outside of Ireland and delayed by at least 24 hours beyond your original return date, your Vhi MultiTrip policy can consider claims for additional transport costs to return you home, provided these have not been refunded by the airline. See information in the Trip Disruption section of your policy under ‘Compensation while travelling’ section.
Policies purchased after 19th June 2024
Any policies purchased on or after the 19th June 2024 have no cover for claims, due to the known planned industrial action. For any policies purchased prior to 19th June 2024, please see your policy wording under Trip Disruption “Knowing your trip would be disrupted” for further information.
